Apple Health

Nutrition tracking that works with Apple Health.

Plenty of food trackers can write calories to Apple Health. JustAddTofu saves every meal with up to 31 nutrients, then reads your activity, weight, sleep, heart, blood sugar and lab results back to show what your eating is doing. Every feature is opt-in, and your Health data never leaves your iPhone.

In short

JustAddTofu is a free iPhone nutrition tracker (log meals by photo, voice or text) with two-way Apple Health integration. It saves each meal to Apple Health as one food entry with up to 31 nutrients, and saves how you felt after a meal as a State of Mind. It reads active and resting energy, weight, height, body fat, workouts, sleep, resting heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose, pregnancy, breastfeeding, menstrual flow and Health Records lab results, and uses them for an energy balance, calorie needs from your weight trend, a protein goal from your weight, post-workout protein reminders, pregnancy and breastfeeding nutrient targets, weekly patterns, lab results next to related nutrients, and a one-page PDF report for a doctor. Each feature is turned on separately, and Apple Health data stays on the iPhone. It needs iOS 18.5 or later; there is no subscription and no account.

Energy balance

What you ate, against what you burned.

Your iPhone and Apple Watch already count active and resting calories. The Daily screen puts them next to what you logged, so “left” means left for the day you actually had. Add exercise to your goal and a long run earns its dinner on Home, Daily and the Watch.

Every Apple Health feature has its own section and asks for its own permission. Connect body measurements and the app fills in your weight, height, age and body fat, estimates your resting energy, and gives a protein range for your weight that you can make your goal. Workouts, life stage, patterns, lab results and the doctor’s report sit below, each one switch away.

Features

Eleven ways it uses Apple Health.

01

Every meal saved to Apple Health

Each meal you log by photo, voice or text is saved as one food entry at the time you ate it, with up to 31 nutrients: calories, macros, saturated, mono- and polyunsaturated fat, cholesterol, fiber, sugar, 11 vitamins and 10 minerals. Change or delete the meal and Apple Health updates too. Meals logged before you connected can be saved in one tap.

02

Calories eaten next to calories burned

An energy balance card on the Daily screen shows what you ate, what you burned (active and resting energy from your iPhone or Apple Watch) and what is left. Turn on “Add exercise calories to my goal” and your goal grows with the active calories Apple Health records, on Home, Daily and Apple Watch.

03

Your real calorie needs, from your weight trend

Log at least 14 full days and weigh yourself 4 times over 4 weeks, and the app works out the calories that keep your weight steady from what you ate and how your weight moved. Use it as your calorie goal in one tap. Until then you see a resting energy estimate from your height, weight and age, and your average daily burn.

04

A protein goal from your weight

Set your protein goal from the body weight in Apple Health, at 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kilogram.

05

A protein reminder after workouts

Within 2 hours of a workout of 20 minutes or more, a notification says how much protein to aim for, with some carbs, and how much protein you have left today.

06

Pregnancy and breastfeeding targets

Nutrient Balance raises targets such as folate, iron and B12 while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Set it yourself or read it from Apple Health. After a logged period, a note points to iron-rich foods.

07

Food, sleep, heart and mood patterns

The weekly report compares nights after a late last meal with other nights’ sleep, salty days with the next day’s resting heart rate and blood pressure, training days with rest days, and the foods you felt best and worst after.

08

How you feel after a meal, as a State of Mind

Answer “How do you feel after this meal?” with one of five faces and it is saved to Apple Health as a State of Mind. Those answers feed the foods and mood pattern.

09

Your actual blood sugar response

If a glucose monitor or meter saves readings to Apple Health, each meal shows your real rise and peak next to its predicted glycemic load, and how much the same food usually raises your blood sugar.

10

Lab results next to the nutrients that affect them

HbA1c, fasting glucose, LDL, HDL and total cholesterol, triglycerides, vitamin D, ferritin and B12 from Health Records, each beside what you log: added sugar and fiber next to HbA1c, saturated fat next to LDL, iron intake next to ferritin.

11

A one-page report for your doctor

A PDF of the last 30 days: average logged intake, nutrient balance, weight, active energy, blood pressure, resting heart rate, sleep and lab results, ready to share with your doctor or dietitian.

Questions

Apple Health questions, answered.

Does JustAddTofu work with Apple Health?

Yes, in both directions. It saves every meal you log to Apple Health, and it reads activity, body measurements, workouts, sleep, heart, blood glucose, cycle and lab data to put your eating in context. Turn on what you want under Settings › Apple Health.

Which nutrients does it save to Apple Health?

Up to 31 per meal: calories, protein, carbohydrates, total fat, saturated fat, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, cholesterol, fiber, sugar, vitamins A, C, D, E, K, B6 and B12, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, selenium, copper and manganese. Calories, protein, carbs and fat are always written; the rest whenever the meal’s analysis has a value for them.

Does it save each meal, or one daily total?

Each meal, as one food entry stamped with the time you ate it and named after the food. Reassigning a meal replaces its entry and deleting it removes the entry, so nothing is counted twice.

Can it add calories burned on my Apple Watch to my calorie goal?

Yes. With “Add exercise calories to my goal” on, your daily goal grows by the active calories Apple Health records from your iPhone or Apple Watch. The adjusted goal shows on Home, the Daily screen and the Watch app.

How does it work out how many calories I need?

From your own data. Over a 4-week window with at least 14 fully logged days and 4 weigh-ins, it compares what you ate with how your weight changed and gives the calories that would keep your weight steady. You can make that your calorie goal in one tap.

Does it work with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM)?

Yes, if your CGM’s or meter’s app saves blood glucose readings to Apple Health. Each meal then shows your real rise and peak next to the predicted glycemic load, and over time how much the same food usually raises your blood sugar.

Can it read my lab results?

Yes, if your health provider shares records with the Health app. It reads HbA1c, fasting glucose, LDL, HDL and total cholesterol, triglycerides, vitamin D, ferritin and vitamin B12, rates each as low, in range or high, and shows it next to how much of the related nutrients you have been eating.

Is my Apple Health data sent to your servers?

No. Apple Health data stays on your iPhone. It is never sent to our server or used for ads. The grocery list, the one feature that contacts our server, uses standard nutrient targets, so even pregnancy or breastfeeding targets read from Health stay on the device.

Can I remove what the app saved to Apple Health?

Yes. In Settings, Clear All can delete your history here and in Apple Health, which removes every meal and after-meal mood the app wrote and leaves other apps’ data alone. You can also revoke access at any time in the Health app.

Do I have to turn on every feature?

No. Each feature asks for only the Health permissions it needs, when you turn it on. You can save meals without sharing sleep, or see lab results without sharing your weight.

What does it cost, and what do I need?

It is free, with no subscription and no account. You need an iPhone with iOS 18.5 or later. The Apple Watch app is optional and included.
